Sunday October 6, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Rd, Rochester
Jointly presented by the Temple Sinai Social Action Committee and Pachamama Alliance Seeds of Hope

You are invited to a powerful program featuring briefings about our democracy’s perilous state by a panel of distinguished professors. We will hear an in depth analysis of what is happening now, consider how this dramatic time affects us, and learn effective actions we can take to protect our democracy.

The program will be moderated by Joan Shelley Rubin, Dexter Perkins Professor in the Department of History, University of Rochester and Ani and Mark Gabrellian Director of the Humanities Center, University of Rochester.

Our panelists:
Gretchen Helmke, Professor of Political Science at the University of Rochester and one of the co-founders of Bright Line Watch (, a non-partisan organization that brings together leading political scientists to monitor democratic practices in the United States from a comparative perspective, will offer an up-to-date report.

Michael Brown, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Rochester Institute of Technology, has studied the forces that shaped 20th Century American political culture, which will form the background to his discussion of populism, demagoguery, and tyranny today.

Joyce Herman is a member of the Social Action Committee of Temple Sinai and of the Rochester Pachamama Alliance’s core team. As an activist, a former counselor (Associate Professor) in the RIT Counseling Center, and the founding director of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), she will offer perspectives on the emotional effects of these fraught times and facilitate brief interactions among participants.

The event is free and open to the public. No advance registration is necessary.
