"Who Speaks for Nature?

Indigenous Environmentalists against Extraction in Ecuador"

presented by
Karleen West

Downtown United Presbyterian Church*
121 North Fitzhugh Street Rochester

For information: Dr. Arnold Matlin, 585-768-6277

Dr. Karleen West is Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at SUNY Geneseo. She will discuss her latest research on the struggles of indigenous communities against international companies promoting natural resource extraction and giant megaprojects in Ecuador. She has just returned from research travel to Ecuador.

Her presentation is very timely—in Latin America land rights and environmental activists are being attacked and killed. These attacks come from both mega-corporations and state actors. Professor West’s research focuses on Latin American politics, especially as these politics influence the environment. Dr. West has published in many different political science journals, and she has given presentations at over a dozen scholarly meetings.
