Description:
Seeds of Hope presents The Doctrine of Discovery – Its Devastating Impact & Legacy —And Some Life-Giving Alternatives Sunday, January 3, 1:30-3:30 EST A free Zoom event open to all As we move into a new year, a new administration, and perhaps a new epoch of human history, we long to live in a world that is just and equitable for all. And yet the realities of white supremacy, voter suppression, police shootings, and endless injustices will follow us right into the future--unless we take a good hard look at where they’re coming from. When we trace the roots of white supremacy, we discover a seldom-mentioned set of 15th-Century papal edicts that solidly set our nation on the course of slavery, genocide of Native Americans, and institutional racism, right from its beginning. This “doctrine of discovery” conferred on European monarchs the right and duty “to invade, search out, capture, vanquish, and subdue all Saracens [Muslims] and pagans whatsoever, and other enemies of Christ wheresoever placed,... and all movable and immovable goods whatsoever held and possessed by them and to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery” (Pope Nicholas V). The doctrine of discovery became the basis of international law, of the enslavement of Africans, of the elimination of 95% of the natives, of the Monroe Doctrine, of “manifest destiny,” and of legal decisions by our Supreme Court right up to today. James Baldwin said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” So on January 3rd, we will face this part of our history together. We will show the powerful one-hour documentary, The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking The Domination Code. We believe this is a must-see for every American. We will process the impact this domination code has had on our lives and society, which we believe every American needs to come to terms with. And we will be inspired by the Native American spiritual laws of mutuality, which we believe every American can benefit from. As a new chapter in our nation’s political story begins, are you ready to help make America great in a way it never really has been before -- a nation where liberty and justice for all is not just a slogan but a living reality? Then we invite you to register for this free Zoom event and join us in helping change history.
