7:00pm [7:00pm] SIFTER presents “Brick by Brick Community Building Film & Workshop: Building C
Description:
Saturday, December 5th, 7:00pm SIFTER presents “Brick by Brick Community Building Film & Workshop: Building Communities of Understanding” The SIFTER series delves into relevant and progressive ideas and ideals harvested from Western New York and beyond and elevates the discourse. About this month’s gathering: Unconscious biases and non-inclusive systemic practices cause barriers to building effective heterogeneous communities. Sharing our stories helps us know each other better and builds more inclusive communities. At Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Tina Chapman DaCosta, Director of Diversity Theater, is addressing this concern with theater-based methods for community building. This presentation will demonstrate how Chapman DaCosta uses the film Brick by Brick to engage in meaningful dialogue in the context of diversity and community building. Topics include race, family, love, forgiveness, biases, and stereotypes. Winner Best Short Film at the San Diego Black Film Festival 2020 and numerous film festival selections, Brick by Brick is the first film written, directed and produced by Tina in partnership with RIT. Brick by Brick is a 16.5 minute film about Tina’s father Elza “Buddy” Cannaday, becoming the first licensed and bonded African American contractor in Cleveland, OH circa 1954. Through a snapshot view, participants experience a day in Buddy’s life in 1941 as he comes to Cleveland to reconnect with the father he thought he knew. A post film facilitated discussion engages participants in testing their assumptions about the film’s themes and reflect upon “snapshots” of their lives through an intercultural get acquainted exercise. The workshop does not promote blame or scapegoating. We look forward to you joining us. Please register at Eventbrite for this FREE online event. You will receive the Zoom link after that.
