5:30pm [5:30pm] Join ROCLA to honor 30 years of Ciudad Hermana Task Force
Description:
Join us for a joint ROCLA/CIUDAD HERMANA Celebration! Wednesday, December 5, 2018 Downtown Presbyterian Church 121 North Fitzhugh Street Pot Luck Supper 5:30 PM-- Please bring a dish to pass Presentation 7:00 PM GUEST SPEAKERS: Martha Rojas and Ashley Sullivan, staff members of the Ciudad Hermana Task Force
In January 1988, eight people from the Rochester area flew to Managua, and then traveled to El Sauce, in northwest Nicaragua. While we were in Managua and then El Sauce, we saw the reality that the U.S. Contra War was causing immense suffering to the people of Nicaragua. There was no valid reason for the Contra War—President Reagan was obsessed with his desire to destroy a successful revolutionary government. We said, “It’s the threat of a good example.” When we returned home, Henrietta Levine convened the first meeting of what is now the Ciudad Hermana Task Force. The CH Task Force has worked for 30 years in solidarity with the people of El Sauce, Nicaragua.

6:00pm [6:00pm] Mark Dunlea on Green New Deal, Climate, Rochester
Description:
Mark Dunlea, the recent Green Party candidate for State Comptroller, will speak in Rochester this Wednesday Dec. 5th at 6 PM. Here is an op ed on climate change that Mark recently wrote for the Times Union. -- The UN says we have 12 years left for an emergency worldwide mobilization to address climate change. We need New York to provide national leadership by enacting the strongest climate change agenda possible. The Off Fossil Fuels act would immediately halt all new fossil fuel infrastructure, transition to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030 (i.e., net zero greenhouse gas emissions), and require all new buildings to be at least net zero carbon emissions http://gelfny.org/news/news-releases/ny-greennewdeal/ Wed. Dec. 5 in Rochester St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Avenue, Rochester 14618. Please join Mark Dunlea, Green Education and Legal Fund ; Neely Kelly, senior NYS organizer for Mothers Out Front; Al Hibner, Citizen's Climate Lobby; Benny Smith, Rochester Youth Climate Leaders; and Ben Frevert, Rochester People's Climate Coalition for a round-table discussion
