11:00am [11:00am] Rally to Support Rochester Rent Strikers
Description:
Rally to Support Rochester Rent Strikers Still Living in Poor Conditions and Without Decision Making Power Tenants in More Buildings to Join Rent Strike Who: RAM Tenant Union (Peter Hungerford Tenants), Thurston Road Tenant Union, and City-Wide Tenant Union of Rochester Where: 967 Chili Ave. Rochester, NY 14611 (a Peter Hungerford-owned building) When: Monday, April 2, 11:00am Why: To Announce the Rochester Rent Strike Expansion and Call for Fundamental Reforms that Prevent Poor Living Conditions for Tenants Rochester, NY - On Monday April 2, 2018 at 11:15 tenants will gather to call for local and state reforms that can prevent poor living conditions for tenants in Rochester. Tenants will also give an update on the largest Rent Strike in Rochester in a generation and announce its expansion to more buildings. Tenants Call for Reforms to Prevent Deplorable Conditions Tenants in many buildings owned by Peter Hungerford and managed by his company Rochester Asset Management have been living with backed up raw sewage, no locks on their doors, rats, roaches, bed bugs, lack of trash being picked up, and general disrepair. In response tenants have begun to organize tenant unions in their buildings and begun rent strikes. Even though the City of Rochester has began to threaten stronger action against slumlords, tenants think the City can go further to enforce decent living conditions. Tenants are calling for the city to follow through on their threat (see recent Channel 10 story) to take 5 of Peter Hungerford's buildings into receivership and use that all their tools to get repairs such as criminal prosecution of derelict slumlords and a Tenant Cooperative Conversion Program that can facilitate tenant ownership and control over their buildings and reduce absentee landlords in Rochester. In addition, tenants are calling on Governor Cuomo and New York State legislature to pass a Housing Court Act which gives tenants to right initiate cases to enforce good conditions and to take over neglected buildings through a receivership process.
