Points to be covered... Commending Assemblyman Harry Bronson’s leadership in introducing the Rochester Housing Court Act (Bill No. A09783) which would give the Rochester tenants’ the right to bring their landlord to court to enforce issues of habitability. Call for the urgent action from the Governor and local legislators to expand tenants’ rights to avoid deteriorating housing conditions for tenants, displacement, homelessness Announcing Thurston Rd. Rent Strike: without adequate tenant protections, tenants are forced to withhold rent to get necessary repairs and to live in dignified conditions Background of the Tenant Struggle on Thurston Road A housing court is urgently needed in Rochester as tenants across the city are living in substandard conditions. One example is the tenants at 447 Thurston Road, who despite many attempts to get repairs from their landlord, have continued to suffer from nights without any heat, ceilings falling in, mold, electrical problems, sewage backing up in their apartments, garbage piling up, rats, roaches, and no locks on the building doors. Currently, the City has cited the building for 38 code violations. Because there is no housing court and other requests have failed, tenants in the building will be launching a rent strike March 1 where they will withhold the rent in order to get necessary repairs. See latest tenant letter to the landlord. For More Information Ryan Acuff - 585 455 0961 Mary Brown - 585 755 3717
