7:00am [7:00am] MAYA FACES IN A SMOKING MIRROR
Description:
MAYA FACES IN A SMOKING MIRROR A feature-length documentary about Maya identity and resistance in contemporary Mexico SPECIAL SHOWING: INTRODUCED AND WITH Q & A BY DIRECTOR BILL JUNGELS Young Mayas from Chiapas, Mexico confront the culture of commodification of all. They also confront super exploitation of the earth and its people, especially indigenous peoples. Young women and men fight for a life of dignity: some are in the traditional life of the milpa for partial food self sufficiency; others have achieved reputations as artists or musicians, or have earned university degrees and work to reestablish their connection to their culture and language. All clearly articulate their stories in spite of the smoke of exploitation. The story of the successful resistance to the building of a “Rural City” in one Mayan township acts as a frame for the stories of the young Mayas and an example of their resistance.
