Description:
ROCLA Presents: “Detention and Deportation Under Obama and Trump” What can we do to help stop detaining and deporting immigrants? Documentary Film Showing: “Immigrants for Sale” Wednesday, April 5, 2017, 7 PM Downtown United Presbyterian Church 121 North Fitzhugh Street, Rochester The church is handicapped accessible and looped for the hearing impaired. Discussion following led by: Iman Abid, Genesee Valley Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union, and Grania Marcus, Greater Rochester Coalition for Immigration Justice. For information: . Dr. Arnold Matlin (585) 768-6277; ahmatlingvcp@igc.org Grania Marcus (917) 579-0199; graniamarcus@gmail.com “Immigrants for Sale” tells the story of the explosive growth of private prisons being used to detain immigrants in the U.S., including women and families. Private detention facilities have turned immigrant detention into a profitmaking business for companies like The GEO Group and Corrections Corporation of America. Not only has the desire for profit helped drive the enormous expansion of those deported and detained by the Obama Administration to over 2.4 million, but the Trump Administration’s January 25 Executive Order seeks to expand that number by ordering the detention of all immigrants caught crossing the US-Mexico border, and then building new detention centers along it. This zeal to detain immigrants, anti-immigrant laws, and the so-called 34,000-bed “mandate” has led to low quality and insufficient food in detention centers, substandard and delayed medical care, 167 detainee deaths in detention since 2003, the denial of due process on a large scale, and the detention of thousands of Central American women and children seeking asylum. Immigrants in detention have a much harder time getting a fair hearing, a lawyer, or time to make their case. And contrary to the myth that undocumented immigrants are criminals, undocumented immigrants commit crimes at half the rate of native-born Americans. Iman Abid and Grania Marcus will help us understand the connections between the growth of detention centers and the deportation dragnet. Come and learn what you can do to help stop these practices!
